Bunny grooming

During the usual Sunday morning groom-fest, Bunya decided to stand. At this time, the furminator is being used on his back ... the indignities he must suffer.

Here, he makes his plea to you, his audience, to please get him out of this predicament, preferably with treats such that he may console himself (papaya welcome).

As stated previously, Bunya is the most prolific shedder. You can see the curve that migrates up his face as the shed progresses. Almost looks like he has a little Snidely Whiplash mustache.

  1. Super Speedy on his way as he hops into his magic closet to sneak Bunya away to treats treasure trove hide out!

    1. Ah ha - Speedy stockpiles treats! You would give Bunya ideas, but I think he's more the instant gratification type ... eat them now, get more later.

  2. That is the cutest picture of Bunya I have ever seen; I did not realize he was so small! He can have treat from me any day!

    1. Yes, he's between 4 and 5 pounds. Lucy is the biggest at a little over 5 pounds and Ethel is the smallest - 3 and change.

  3. Wish Umbra would let me brush her. Any tips?

    1. Hmmmm ... Soft bristle brush, for sure. Whatever method we employ, we have small treats handy for throughout the process (smaller than normal bits, because we will give each several and one when finished). One way is to do it in a confined area on the floor, so they do not have to be picked up (e.g., for Lucy). Another is like the vet, on a higher surface. In either case, hold them firmly but gently (ask vet to show you some holds), but especially if you put them up on a counter. Good luck!

  4. My Callie-girl is in full molt mode right now. The curtains above her pen are covered in white fluff (not to mention every spot not covered by ... nevermind, every spot is covered by fluff - LOL).

Kellish - Callie doesn't like being groomed at all, but when she's molting I have to brush her at least two to three times a week or I fear for her tummy. I tend to do it on the patio, so I don't have to worry about stray fur clogging up the vacuum. I put her in my lap with her head tucked under one elbow and use that hand to keep her corralled (not trapped, just held in place so she doesn't try to bite or make a jump for it). I use a silicone cat brush (no metal parts) and brush her from neck to tail for a bit, then reverse to get some of the strays. Then I put the brush down and start plucking off the bigger tufts.

All the time I'm brushing her, I'm cooing what a beautiful bun she is and how tolerant she is of my clumsy ministrations. Sometimes I get 5-10 minutes of grooming in before she wiggles free like a toddler, other times I'm lucky to get some of the looser tufts pulled before she nips and flees for the safety of her pen.

After it's all done, I give her two of Annie's Ginger Bunnies as a treat and then give her a little head pat before she gives me the bunny butt. She's usually ready for more head rubs about an hour later and very appreciative of the lack of loose fur (though she'd just as likely thump me for suggesting I was good for anything :) ).
