Happy Anniversary, Bugs Bunny!

This is a bunny blog, so I must note today's special anniversary:
Bugs Bunny's official debut 07-27-1940 in A Wild Hare, 79 years ago today.

Those cartoons are the only reason I know any opera.

Sunday morning disruption

If you are a regular Rabbit Ramblings reader ("R4"), you know everything come out of the bunnies' pen Sunday morning for cleaning. Usually, Bunya runs off into the fresh hay/litter box we put outside the pen, and then into his bun cave (a box that faces the TV).

This morning, he took a stand in his uncarpeted castle tower (the rugs were out to be vacuumed). Deciding it was useless, he went to his bun cave while we continued cleaning.

Because he is losing his sight, with cataracts in both eyes, we don't move move the boxes, towers, ramps or tunnels around anymore. They go back in the same places; we want him to be on familiar ground. The pen is open all day but closed at night; we don't want him to get hurt trying to keep up with Ethel in the dark.

Funny Bunny Behavior

Image may contain: text that says 'The look I get when I stop the bunny massage.'

"Did I say you could stop?"

Ethel will not take "direct" head rubs from a human, so when Bunya settles in for a massage, she puts her head as close to his as she can and allows herself to join in... while she closes her eyes and pretends that it is Bunya grooming her.

(Note massage indent on Bunya's head.)

Make it a Happy 4th of July for your bunnies, too!

You remember the holiday message right?
Don't drink and drive.
Don't text and drive.
Don't drink and text.
When boating, wear a big orange life vest (you humans look so funny in those).
Play with your bunnies and give them lots of treats!

Be grateful to be in the land of the free and the home of the buns.

Well, here's another one: Bunnies don't like fireworks.
It stresses them just like other sudden and/or loud noises.

If your bunny's neighborhood is firecracker noisy, keep the buns cool and quiet.
Close the windows and doors. Close the blinds to avoid flashing lights.

Play music - peaceful, easy listening (not loud). Think elevator music.
(No hair bands or hare bands. Stay away from 1812 Overture.)
Your TV service might even have a suitable channel in its lineup - you just never tune to those channels.

If you do not already have boxes for them to play on and in, get some plain cardboard boxes (not slick or a lot of ink/color, no staples, labels or tape); cut at least two openings in each box big enough for your bunny to get in and out. They can hide in them, to further mute the noise and feel a little safer.

An air filter in their room may provide a white noise to help muffle the fireworks' sounds.

Keep them company and reassure them that everything's okay. Pet them if they are the petting kind of bunnies. Have a couple of healthy treats handy (Bunya told me to say that).

Have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July holiday!

Here's another great article about Pet and Fireworks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Previously saw these bunnies celebrating on the GHRS Facebook page and their humans from Langhorne, PA graciously sent their too cute pictures for the RR Fourth of July ...
Chloe & Casper,
Rabbit Ramblings' 4th of July bunnies!
<< Insert "SQUEEE" here >>
(Chloe looks like a living Rorschach test)
And Daffney is preparing for the sunshine and cookout
(or maybe the fireworks ... be a dear and fetch her ear plugs, please).
P.S. Daffney, a lionhead, was adopted from the Bucks County SPCA.
Four lucky bunnies (two bonded couples) live together with well-trained human servants who have been adopting rabbits for over 20 years -- way to go!
Wisely, all bunnies are "math-impaired" (they can't multiply).
Memorial Day
Hi, there. Bunya here.
Here are some holiday rules and cautions:
Don't drink and drive.
Don't text and drive.
Don't drink and text (you can get in a lot of trouble).
When boating, wear a big orange life vest (you humans look so funny in those).
Play with your bunnies and give them lots of treats!
Have a safe & wonderful holiday weekend!
And thank the members of the armed forces, past and present,
that we have the freedom to celebrate.
"Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces." [Link: Wikipedia]
Bunny care: If fireworks are used to celebrate in your area
Trip to the vet for bunny cataracts
No photo description available.
We wanted to take Bunya in to check his cataracts - his previously "good" eye has started clouding now, too. It also coincided with their 6-month wellness checkup.
Ethel does not like to leave home and her ears shake like carrot tops in a hurricane as soon as she is in the carrier. She almost buries herself under Mr. B. When he is examined, she just shakes. When they are switched, he starts tearing up the towel and eating it until she's back with him.
Whenever one goes to the vet, they both go to reduce the risk of bonding breaks - which we had happen early on when we first had bunnies.
Since Bunya is losing his vision, their setup and the furniture in the room will stay where it is. No more changing configurations of castles, bridges and tunnels. At night, their pen door will be closed to limit his territory in the dark to a very familiar "safe space" for them. It's where they hang out 80-90% of the time anyway, even when the gate is open.
At 11-1/2, Bunya knows that growing old is not for sissies.
May be a little darker than usual, but I am tired of people trying to make lame jokes about eating bunnies. Here are some memes you can use in response:
Miss Ethel may be mellowing... just a little
Mr. Bunya was our first bunny (and a surprise from our daughter, who left for college a few months later). As we learned about bunnies and bunny care, we wanted to adopt some companions for this sociable animal.
However, before we learned that, Mr. Bunya was a solo bun and got all of our attention. He became familiar with humans and is not as stand off-ish as the adoptees.
Ethel will not come for head rubs by herself. If you try, she'll jet away after a second.
However, she has come to realize that if she snuggles up real close to Bunya, she can PRETEND it's Bunya grooming her.
At first, she would only self-delude for less than a minute, maybe 10-30 seconds. Then she'd look up all surprised-like: "Who is this!? You're not Bunya!" - and run off. Bunya always stays and melts like a puddle into the floor to suck up the love.
In this video, Bunya settles next to my recliner for some head rubs (but never too close, so I have to extend my arm way over to reach him). Ethel hung around for more than 30 seconds. This is only an excerpt from a longer video, but Ethel actually hung out and accepted some pets!
This is a huge development with her. On the bunny pages, people often ask how long did it take for your bunny to trust you?
So Ethel may be mellowing... just a little - and after only NINE YEARS.
Bunnies require patience.
Easter bunny napkin folding
Martha Stewart bunny napkin recipe
Materials: Cotton or linen napkins, starched
1. Fold starched napkin into thirds to form a rectangle. (If you're using a square napkin, you'll need to fold in half, and then fold in half again to get a long rectangular shape.)
2. Crease in half to create a center line for reference; fold top corners down along this line.
3. Fold up from bottom corners along dotted lines.
4. Bring left and right edges together on center line.
5. Flip upside down and over. Turn up bottom point.
6. To fasten: Fold left and right corners back; tuck one corner into the pocket of the other. Pull out bunny ears first; open up base.
If you are a little less formal, here's a video showing how to fold paper napkins:
Spay & neuter - read about it at here. It discusses the reasons for doing it, age to do it, questions for the vet, and pre- & post-op care. Enter “spay neuter” in the search box in the upper right corner for more articles on topic. The site also has vet listings and local HRS chapters. Spaying a female bunny will double her life expectancy (otherwise, the great majority die of cancer of the reproductive organs).
Funny Bunny Monday Meme*day
Bunny care: Bunnies are prey animals. They instinctively know that predators seek the weakest. Therefore, a sick bunny will expend all his energy trying to keep up the appearance of being a healthy rabbit. When they finally give in, they can go downhill rapidly, because they have already been sick for a while. That's why, like this meme says, you have to act fast.
Funny Bunny Monday Meme*day, with a backstory
The rabbit in this meme is one of hundreds just rescued in a confiscation (story here). Rabbit Rescues across the county are stepping in to help rehabilitate and adopt out these poor rabbits. Already at capacity, shelters expect a flood of rabbits after Easter, as the "Easter Bunny" impulse purchases are abandoned.
If you can help a rabbit rescue in any way (volunteer, foster, adopt or donate), it will be greatly appreciated and will save bunny lives.
Thank you.
Easter - real bad for real, live bunnies
This is a link where you can read about why: Easter and Rabbits Do Not Mix
The RR Bunny Advocacy page of Memes (many about Easter)
Please ...
Pick some memes/posters you like and spread the word:
Post it on your blog or Facebook page.
Post it in your church.
Ask your clergy to mention it from the pulpit.
Circulate it to your neighborhood groups.
Email it to your friends and contacts.
Send them to teachers/post it at school.
Ask your local paper to print it.
Ask TV and radio channels to make it into a PSA.
Please help save somebunny.
"It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little."
Regardless of the effort, after Easter, rabbit rescues will be flooded with rabbits that have become unwanted Easter gifts. Please donate any amount you can to your local rabbit or other animal rescue. If you don't have one, here's a great one: GHRS
And here is the international House Rabbit Society.
Don't give animals as gifts -- this applies to bunnies, chicks, ducklings, cats and dogs. Please be an educated, loving and caring pet person.
Adopt - don't shop.
[The above used to link to web pages, but the links don't work any more.]
Will you think of me at Easter,
Will you buy me as a gift...
For your girlfriend, boyfriend, little child
To grant their special wish?
Will you think of me inside my hutch,
That tiny 'starter-pack'
That doesn't let me hop around
And starts to hurt my back?
Will you think of me 'tomorrow'
When you go to work or school
With a lovely lunch packed in your bag,
'Cos I get hungry too...
Will you think of me, just sometimes please?
My hutch, it smells so bad.
I'd love some water in my bowl,
And some hay..I'd be so glad!
Will you think of me when the sun shines bright
And it's 'wonderfully hot'
But I cant get cool, this heat is cruel,
Don't tell me you've forgot!
Will you think of me when the north wind blows
And my hutch floor turns to ice,
And I'm shivering whilst you're all warm
Underneath your quilt so nice?
Will you think of me? Please think of me!
I'm helpless, at your mercy!
Why did you buy me on a whim?
Why did you then desert me?
Will you think of me now Easter has
Arrived yet once again,
And a thousand little bunnies
Face a life of hopeless pain?
I can binkie over rainbows now,
I am happy, and I'm free.
But I wonder, now that I have gone,
Will you ever think of me....?
Bunny Butt Friday at the breakfast hay buffet
Smile because... bunny butt!
And it's Friday!
Mr. Bunya's tufted tush for a video #bunnybuttfriday. Are you a bunny butt tuft plucker? Anyway, Mr. B is enjoying his oat hay while Ethel chows down on some first cut Timothy hay (both from Small Pet Select
- their version of a breakfast hay buffet..
Ethel is inside their pen; the gate is open all day but closed at night for their safety. Bunya is in a "senior's" litter box (lower edges) but he is still fine with the regular litter boxes; this one is for when his arthritis makes the taller ones a bit more difficult.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Those ears!
Vincent is a about to become a "foster fail" - but don't tell him yet - or anyone, because with those ears, he'll hear you.
Rescues need volunteers, foster homes to expand their capacity, adopters and donations.
