Easter bunny napkin folding

Materials: Cotton or linen napkins, starched

1. Fold starched napkin into thirds to form a rectangle. (If you're using a square napkin, you'll need to fold in half, and then fold in half again to get a long rectangular shape.)
2. Crease in half to create a center line for reference; fold top corners down along this line.
3. Fold up from bottom corners along dotted lines.
4. Bring left and right edges together on center line.

5. Flip upside down and over. Turn up bottom point.

6. To fasten: Fold left and right corners back; tuck one corner into the pocket of the other. Pull out bunny ears first; open up base.

If you are a little less formal, here's a video showing how to fold paper napkins:

Another bunny-human look-a-like

Another proposed doppelganger was voted up from the Rabbit Ramblings Facebook page. It has been added to the RR blog doppelganger page.

Birthday bunny stuff

To clarify, bunny stuff I got for my birthday.
Our (and GHRS's) best guess is that the abandoned sisters, Lucy & Ethel, are Pisces and were assigned birthdays accordingly. I am a Pisces, too, and for some inexplicable reason, people send me bunny stuff.

Coolest bunny item!
Bunny art from my NC artist cousin,
mixed media entitled "Bonded Pair"

(You may have noticed that part of the mixed media
includes cardboard - an integral part of any domestic pet bunny's life.)

Lifelong friend and part-time origami artist sent me the third of "My Three Buns"
(apologies to Fred MacMurray et al, if you are old enough to get the reference)
All in different positions, now representing Bunya, Lucy & Ethel
(note how detailed in the fold, so that it looks like they have eyes
by just folding the dollar bill so the right part is on the head)

And bunny cards!

Inside L: Hope your birthday is magical.
Inside R: Hoping all your dreams come true on your birthday.

(So you can source cards)

Having a birthday close to Easter guarantees plenty of bunny cards,
so some get modified.
Inside L: Everybunny dance now!
[And there is a dancing (vibrating) bunny as the song plays]
Inside R: Fortunately, that's all that I need!
[All anyone could stand, more likely.]

Easter is coming soon - bad for (real, live) bunnies

This is a link where you can read about why: Easter and Rabbits Do Not Mix

The RR Bunny Advocacy page of Memes (many about Easter)

Please ...
Pick some memes/posters you like and spread the word:
Post it on your blog or Facebook page.
Post it in your church.
Ask your clergy to mention it from the pulpit.
Circulate it to your neighborhood groups.
Email it to your friends and contacts.
Send them to teachers/post it at school.
Ask your local paper to print it.
Ask TV and radio channels to make it into a PSA.

Please help save somebunny.
"It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little."

Regardless of the effort, after Easter, rabbit rescues will be flooded with rabbits that have become unwanted Easter gifts. Please donate any amount you can to your local rabbit or other animal rescue. If you don't have one, here's a great one: GHRS
And here is the international House Rabbit Society.

Don't give animals as gifts -- this applies to bunnies, chicks, ducklings, cats and dogs. Please be an educated, loving and caring pet person.
Adopt - don't shop.

The Plea of the Easter Bunny

Will you think of me at Easter,
Will you buy me as a gift...
For your girlfriend, boyfriend, little child
To grant their special wish?

Will you think of me inside my hutch,
That tiny 'starter-pack'
That doesn't let me hop around
And starts to hurt my back?

Will you think of me 'tomorrow'
When you go to work or school
With a lovely lunch packed in your bag,
'Cos I get hungry too...

Will you think of me, just sometimes please?
My hutch, it smells so bad.
I'd love some water in my bowl,
And some hay..I'd be so glad!

Will you think of me when the sun shines bright
And it's 'wonderfully hot'
But I cant get cool, this heat is cruel,
Don't tell me you've forgot!

Will you think of me when the north wind blows
And my hutch floor turns to ice,
And I'm shivering whilst you're all warm
Underneath your quilt so nice?

Will you think of me? Please think of me!
I'm helpless, at your mercy!
Why did you buy me on a whim?
Why did you then desert me?

Will you think of me now Easter has
Arrived yet once again,
And a thousand little bunnies
Face a life of hopeless pain?

I can binkie over rainbows now,
I am happy, and I'm free.
But I wonder, now that I have gone,

Will you ever think of me....?

Bunny Monday Meme*day

The meme is funny. What follows, not so much.

Coming soon: One of the worst time of the year for bunnies -- Easter.

Do not give bunnies (or chicks or any animals) as gifts or buy one on impulse for the holidays. They are not easy-to-care-for "starter" pets. Educate yourself before you adopt any pet. Starting soon after Easter, bunnies will be ignored in little cages, released outside (very bad - domestic rabbits do not have the coping skills of wild rabbits), or will die from improper care.

Lots of Easter-themed memes are on the Bunny Advocacy Memes page. Please share some on your Facebook page or blog between now and Easter.

Pros and Cons of Bunnies as pets is on this page. It includes links to similar lists.

Please be a caring and responsible pet owner. Thank you.

One day at the bunny bistro

Just another day in bunny-land. This bistro has two sections: pooping and non-pooping.

Or perhaps it's more that Lucy was in the main dining room and Bunya was at the dessert bar. Yeah, I guess that sounds more appetizing. If there was sound, you could hear the hay cubes thumping the bottom of the box, but the TV was on... a restaurant show, ironically.

The box is where the bunnies get their hay cubes. Theoretically, it's to help reduce the spread of hay cube dust. And stepping on an errant hay cube is similar to stepping on a Lego. Of course, the contained box concept is ruined when Lucy comes and bosses the chunks of hay cube out of the box and to wherever she decides to take them.

Ethel stops by to check out the dessert bar menu, but since she had eaten there earlier, she passed the second time.

Earlier...
Ethel: Well, if the paparazzi is going to stick his camera
in my face while I'm trying to eat, I'm leaving.

[And she did.]

Bunny-human look-a-like

Another proposed doppelganger was voted up from the Rabbit Ramblings Facebook page. It has been added to the RR blog doppelganger page.

Phant-bun of the Opera and Phantom of the Opera (Gerard Butler)
Bunny is actually Venus the Bunny

(Suggested doppelganger was Two-Face, but they are really harsh and she's too pretty for that.)

(Some of) What Bunny Volunteers Do

Easter is coming, 04-05-2015.
Please do NOT get a rabbit for Easter or give one as a gift.

The stories below are examples of what happens to these poor animals.
If they are not:
A. killed from improper care (e.g., bunnies need hay, not carrots; many pet store "treats" sold for bunnies can be deadly) or
B. neglected in a corner of the garage or in a hutch (that exposes them to temperature extremes, noxious fumes, no socialization and cramped quarters), then
C. uncaring owners may "release" them into the wild (for which domestic bunnies have no coping skills).

Volunteers:
1. Give hours of time to rescuing and rehabbing abandoned bunnies, often nursing them back to health,
2. Transport bunnies to the vet or elsewhere as needed,
3. Provide a safe, clean, caring environment to house the bunnies,
4. Educate people on how to care for bunnies,
5. Often take these bunnies into their own homes to foster when the shelter is filled to capacity (as it is too often and especially a few weeks after Easter),
6. Look for forever homes for these pets,
7. Advocate for rabbits where often gross mistreatment is uncovered,
8. Donate their own money to the cause and hold fundraising events,
And (finally, to the point of this story) -
9. Are bunny wranglers.
[I am probably forgetting a lot more.]

So to connect item C with item 9 above, here are a couple of the cases from last month. Volunteers tried over weeks to corral these two survivors, dubbed "warrior bunnies" for their incredible will to live. Their survival over these last frigid winter weeks makes their stories even more amazing.

The now named Annie Oakley was spotted near a facility on Oak street, hence the name. She was one of 4 abandoned bunnies. One's body was found after being hit by a car and the other two disappeared, likely prey to the colony of feral cats that lived where they were thoughtfully abandoned.
Abandoned bunny

Finally!

Annie Oakley!

Annie Oakley in her new safe digs
Update from Ellen, the volunteer who took her in: I brought the bunny home and she settled in quite nicely! She finally started eating pellets and Exact, and I couldn't believe how many times this rabbit flopped and rolled over! This was probably the first time in weeks this bunny felt truly safe. She looked so relaxed and happy! She's still very skittish, but looked happy with flopping and grooming!

Delta was spotted - well, you figure it out - this is Atlanta! In both cases, volunteers were restricted from accessing certain areas, like where the bunnies spent a lot of time. But they persevered and were able to rescue Delta, too.

Spotted!

Delta - safe inside where domestic bunnies belong!
