Funny Bunny Memes

Just catching up on some memes posted on the Rabbit Ramblings Facebook page.

I call this "Lois on the wrong side of the gate".
It's some of her finest work.
This is why we call "bunny proofing"... "attempted bunny proofing".
You'll never be convicted of bunny proofing.

It's not a bunny meme -- BUT IT SHOULD BE!

Ethel meme

Ethel, last night, scarfing down the 3rd cut hay by herself.
Quite the mouthful there, Ethel.

Bunny Butt Friday at the breakfast hay buffet

Smile because... bunny butt!
And it's Friday!
Mr. Bunya's tufted tush for a video #bunnybuttfriday. Are you a bunny butt tuft plucker? Anyway, Mr. B is enjoying his oat hay while Ethel chows down on some first cut Timothy hay (both from Small Pet Select)
- their version of a breakfast hay buffet..
Ethel is inside their pen; the gate is open all day but closed at night for their safety. Bunya is in a "senior's" litter box (lower edges) but he is still fine with the regular litter boxes; this one is for when his arthritis makes the taller ones a bit more difficult.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Bunya and his bowl of oat hay

You know how, sometimes, smaller hay bits (and dust) settle at the bottom of the box or bag of hay? Well, Bunya loves his oat hay but the pieces were getting too small for our usual hay distribution channels. Put it in a bowl and Bunya was a happy camper. Turn up the volume so you can hear him crunching.  (No dust, just small hay pieces in bowl.)

Where's Ethel?

Noticed Ethel was "missing".

The hay box is supposed to be opened in a way to let them graze without turning it into a litter box. Don't think she turned it into a litter box but still, the best-laid plans of mice and men...

Ethel in the hay box

Ethel's dumpster diving efforts are extraordinary - she goes to great lengths to find that perfect piece of hay.

The box top is set like it is to allow them to access the hay, hopefully without them turning it into another litter box. About 9 seconds in, she uses her head to try to move the top out of her way. (Total clip ~24 seconds)

Ethel's previous attempt to go "all in"...

And some postprandial snuggling...

The box of hay

Ethel usually stretches up (periscopes) to get that particular piece of hay (whatever characteristics makes that piece the one she has to dig out). Last night, she just settled into the hay and grazed in comfort.

Hopefully, that's all she did. I was trying to prevent their hopping in, by only opening the box as in the picture; but Ethel is so tiny, she squeezed in anyway.

Bunya stands guard (not really, he's just waiting for treat time).

The hay feeder

We won this hay feeder from the online FB auction of the Alabama Rabbit Rescue. (Their Facebook page is here.)

The bunnies love their new hay feeder, especially since it's filled twice a day with third cut hay. Ethel dives in for that singular best piece of gourmet hay... I'd love to know what makes it so.

One time, I came in the room and she was buried so deep she didn't hear or see me until she pulled her head out - and took off like a rocket to hide. She has issues.

I wouldn't be too surprised to find her entirely inside it one day.

Bunya and Ethel eating hay

Just about a minute of bunnies peacefully eating hay.

That's all. I like watching bunnies chew. Or yawn. Or flop. Or binky.

Clean litter box, fresh hay

Sunday is the bunnies' top-to-bottom, clean-everything day. Here, Bunya and Ethel enjoy a clean litter box and fresh hay.

What makes that perfect piece of hay that they seek? I've always wondered as they sift through. Don't know but a good bet in this case is the third cut hay mixed in. (~38 seconds)

Like I've said, I like watching bunnies eat.

The bunnies' new hay dispenser

As part of the fundraising for the new HRS chapter in Alabama, we were highest bid on a new hay dispenser for the bunnies. It seems to have received the Good Bunkeeping Seal of Approval. In the end, that's all that matters.

You can read about the hay box here (including the other wonderful stuff that came with it).
The Blissful Bunny's Facebook page is here. They have made our bunnies' castle towers, bridge, ramp, tunnel, elevated princess bed and several chew toys. They used to donate the profits to rabbit rescues. Now they have started their own House Rabbit Society chapter and so, basically the same thing. Truly quality made bunny furniture, if they have time to make some - they are caring for a LOT of bunnies now. In their house.

Hay is a necessity for bunnies

Bunnies should have access to unlimited hay 24/7, along with clean fresh water. Primarily, Bunya and Ethel eat Timothy hay; we get the first and second cut from Small Pet Select. To change things up, we get them a variety of "treat" hays (but not alfalfa - they are way too old for that).

[Disclosure: Rabbit Ramblings, its bunnies and its humans have no ownership or financial interest in Small Pet Select.]

We just got a new cut of hay, Small Pet Select's "third cut". To see if the bunnies liked it, I put it in its own bowl. It was a bedtime treat.

"Before"

What I found the next morning:
"After"

I formed a hypothesis that... just maybe, perhaps, it could be... they liked this new "flavor".

And to test this hypothesis, filled the bowl up again.
Then add bunnies. (Actually, they added themselves as soon as I put it down).

Of course, silly human that I am, I put the best pieces of hay in the bottom of the bowl, so they had to fluff it up to access those. (Will have to develop another study sometime, to see what makes that perfect piece of hay.)

Here's video of bunnies eating hay. Watch as much as you want - it doesn't change much:
select piece of hay, chew it, select another.

Bunya & Ethel's taste test

Disclosure: Small Pet Select ("SPS") sent us some products (at no charge) and asked the bunnies to taste test them and to post the honest results. RR, its bunnies and its humans have no ownership or financial interest in SPS. Here are the products, the results and a discount coupon code.

SPS sent us (these are links to the product pages):
A box of 2nd Cut Timothy Hay
A package of Heavenly Green Crunch
A package of Vita-Licious Essentials

This discount code is for 50% off of one package of the Heavenly Green Crunch if you want to try it: RABBITRAMBLINGS

For other purchases, Small Pet Select will donate 10% of the purchase to a rescue. When we buy, we use the coupon code GHRS rather than any of the other coupons. You can check to see if there is a code for your rescue or get your rescue to register for a code. (There's a button link in the right hand column of our blog pages - scroll down a little from the top of the page and you'll see it.)

We didn't need to "test" the 2nd cut Timothy Hay. We order our hay from Small Pet Select already and have a huge box of it the bunnies are working on. We also order the first cut hay - we think Bunya and Ethel prefer this. We prefer the first cut hay for them because it has more fiber and flowers. High fiber will hopefully help keep their pipes running, especially since we are dealing with trying to clear Bunya's blockage. They get both the first and second cut hay every day. SPS also has a 3rd cut hay if you have a picky eater. Check out their site for descriptions.

Since I was not going to eat them (even though they smelled good - if the bunnies had not liked them, I might have used them as potpourri), I thought the best way to convey the results was to show you the bunnies. Here's Bunya checking out the Heavenly Green Crunch:

Ethel is the pickier eater. It was not that she didn't like it, but I distracted her when I got down on the floor to video them, So I tried a more "scientific" method. I put about a tablespoon of both treats on opposite sides of a plate to see what they would do.

They both ate both treats but the way it settled out here, Bunya seemed to gravitate to the Heavenly Green Crunch and Ethel did the same with the Vita-Licious Essentials.

They did not eat it all in a single sitting (thankfully). They both came back later (separately) and Ethel was sniffing for a particular ingredient. She nosed under the plate to get at it, pushed both treats into one pile and wore the plate like a big tilted hat (wish I had gotten that picture but I laughed too long before I grabbed the camera).

Here's Bunya after he came back later to nosh
from the combined treats mixed together.
Bunya stepped on the plate for easier access
to some snack ingredient.
It's always been a great rabbit mystery to me
why they dig for one particular piece of hay,
what makes it so special.
Here's one of Ethel's solo treat trips.
This was after she wore the plate like a hat
and the two treats became one.
Love her blue eyes.

A great suggestion from one of the GHRS volunteers (thebunnylady, mentioned elsewhere in this blog) was to sprinkle these treats onto the bunnies' hay to encourage them to eat more hay.

Table for One, or Ethel sneaking some pellets

Bunya is on an all hay diet to make sure he's on the road to recovering from his recent stomach blockage. This will likely be his future forever diet.

Well, that means poor little Miss Ethel is on an all hay diet, too.

But I try to sneak her some pellets when Mr. B is not around. In this case, Bunya was off in the hay cube box and Ethel was playing in their cardboard "warren" under the kitchen table. Ethel now knows that if I tap on a certain door, I am prepared to offer her some pellets or a treat Bunya can't have.

When this video starts, Ethel has finished the first course of pellets but is still hanging out hoping for more. Of course, I caved in and provide more pellets for her surreptitious enjoyment (about 20-ish seconds in). Still love watching bunnies chew.

That perfect piece of hay

We have often wondered here what makes that perfect little piece of hay, the one the bunny has to dig for and paw through the rest to find.

Well, apparently, it is possible for a human to identify it for the bunny. Sometimes. Our daughter seems to have the touch and found Bunya a hay treat, that perfect stem with the little hay flower on top.

One day at the hay buffet

Lucy and Ethel eating hay together. About 20 seconds in, Lucy periscopes for some more hay. Lucy had quite the Dutch bunny bootay. As you can see, her center of gravity was so low, she could lean over like Michael Jackson in Smooth Criminal.

There are two kinds of hay there, well, different "cuts" of Timothy hay. The "first cut" is the coarser, with more roughage or fiber. That's the one they are eating. They also get a variety of "treat" hays in smaller quantities (but not alfalfa - they are too old for that).

(This was a few days before Lucy passed.)
