Japan: a bunny-rich environment #1

Took a lot of pictures and may have even purchased one or two of these.

Museum gift shop (yes, we got one)

Jewelry, a pin

Museum gift shop
(yes - how could you not get
samurai bunnies?)

Our guide's t-shirt
was the name of a bar.
Total coincidence

Bunny shrine

It was the smallest sake cup,
but I had to pick it.
Them's the rules.

Okay, I bought this cup

Rabbit Ramblings is 11

Rabbit Ramblings began 11 years ago today.
It began with the bunnies and me in the basement, with a flying bat, and (as usual) DrMrsBunnyMom out of town.
After I emailed my family about this adventure, my son said "You should write a blog".
Et voilĂ !

That first RR post: Bat in My Belfry

Title match: Lucy vs. Slinky

Welcome to the Slinky Boxing Championship of the World!
And in this corner ...

Well, Lucy versus the Slinky and then her pen's fence.

Lucy had tangled the bottom of this Slinky in the fence a while back. Recently, somebunny (likely her) broke the bottom free and so it was like a whole new toy again.

After she plays with the Slinky, she does a brief periscope and then takes on the fence.

What I didn't realize at the time is the sound effect that the video would pick up since the camera was steadied on one of the fence's horizontal support bars.
That makes it an epic battle!

Happy 4th of July!

Saw these bunnies celebrating on the GHRS Facebook page and their humans from Langhorne, PA graciously sent their too cute pictures for the RR Fourth of July ...

Meet Chloe & Casper,
Rabbit Ramblings' 4th of July bunnies!
<< Insert "SQUEEE" here >>

(Chloe looks like a living Rorschach test)

And Daffney is preparing for the sunshine and cookout
(or maybe the fireworks ... be a dear and fetch her ear plugs, please).

P.S. Daffney, a lionhead, was adopted from the Bucks County SPCA.

Four lucky bunnies (two bonded couples) live together with well-trained human slaves who have been adopting rabbits for over 20 years -- way to go!
Wisely, all bunnies are "math-impaired" (they can't multiply).

You remember the holiday message right?
Don't drink and drive.
Don't text and drive.
Don't drink and text.
When boating, wear a big orange life vest (you humans look so funny in those).
Play with your bunnies and give them lots of treats!

Be grateful to be in the land of the free and the home of the buns.
Well, here's another one: Bunnies don't like fireworks.
It stresses them just like other sudden and/or loud noises.

If your bunny's neighborhood is firecracker noisy, keep the buns cool and quiet.
Close the windows and doors.

Play music - peaceful, easy listening (not loud). Think elevator music.
(No hair bands or hare bands. Stay away from 1812 Overture.)
Your TV service might even have a suitable channel in its lineup - you just never tune to those channels.

If you do not already have boxes for them to play on and in, get some plain cardboard boxes (not slick or a lot of ink/color, no staples, labels or tape); they can hide in them, to further mute the noise and feel a little safer.

Keep them company and reassure them that everything's okay. Pet them if they are the petting kind of bunnies. Have a couple of healthy treats handy (Bunya told me to say that).

Have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July holiday!

One day at the bunny breakfast dishes...

Bunya: I can't believe I ate the whole thing.
Ethel: You need to stop eating so fast.
And leave some for us girls.

Bunya: No lectures, pleeease. I'm just going to nap it off...
Anyone know what time is dinner tonight?

Lucy with a long memory and a short fuse

Check out the last couple of days' posts. Lucy is still extremely wary of humans bearing treats. Here she is peeking out of one of their play boxes:
Just step away from the box, Human!
Getting Lucy into the carrier requires a new strategy each time. It seems she has quite a memory. She's always had a sixth sense about when someone wanted to pick her up to snuggle; now she just won't let you in her vicinity. Who knows what will be required next time we have to get her to the vet or GHRS. One thing is for sure ... we'd better start waaaaaay before our appointment time.

Maybe we can set up some camouflaged pit-in-the-floor or net-in-a-tree trap like the bad guys used in the old Tarzan movies (or Predator, if you want a more recent reference ... they must work, they still use them). Maybe a bunny-sized butterfly net.

This morning, I called and whistled to give them their favorite treat. Bunya and Ethel responded speedily, as usual, like they had been shot out of a cannon.

Lucy was conflicted. She was excited, she knew there was good stuff to be had, but she stayed in the pen, "pacing" anxiously back and forth along the fence wall. She would not run over or follow the others for her treat. When I went to hand it to her through the fence, she first scurried away, then came back and tentatively took it from me ... and then scurried away again to eat it.

Can you say "paranoid"?
Sure, I knew you could.
(Not a Mr. Rogers reference, unless you want it to be.)

Bunny Sightings at London Portobello Market, Pt 2

The English are crazy about Peter Rabbit and Alice in Wonderland.

were mostly on shelves to the right of this shot.)

Bunny Shop Window in Paris

As noted in a prior post, Paris was the more bunny-rich environment and here is a good example - all in one display window...

What do you get for the baby that wants everything bunny?

Bunny puppet
Bunny hat

Stuffed bunny

Bunny bed mate

Stuffed bunny
SuperBunny costume?
BunnyBoy?
Maybe a robe

Bunny ???
Overall, Paris gives the impression it appreciates bunnies.
Still more to come. Same Bun-Time. Same Bun-Channel.

The Bunny Precision Flopping Drill Team

It was getting late, about 11PM - it was bunny bedtime. Even with the gate open, they usually go into their pen to hang out after they have run around or done a NASBunny. The 3 of them went in and -

It was the Bunny Precision Flopping Drill Team:
Girls, right face!
Boys, left face!
Ears up!

I couldn't move out of my chair or they would scramble, looking for a treat. As it is, the little click the cell phone makes alerts Ethel. The picture is thru the pen chain link, because when I got up to try another fence-less angle, they got up, too.
Ethel looks to me like she's saying her goodnight prayers, nose on folded paws.

Vanity License Plate - SUPRSIZ

Ironically, a small picture ... it was far away.

Super Size?
A big person?
A fan of McDonalds?
Likes big portions?

Maybe someone who likes to be startled? (“Surprises”)
Doesn't sound like a good thing while driving your truck.

Bunya got some "supersize" kind of cracks when we first got Lucy & Ethel, but he's just a very fluffy bunny.
Really.
Does this fuzzy fur make me look fat?
Who cares? You are very soft.
And they were smaller than him then, still babies.
Now Lucy's the biggest.

Bunny reunion has gone very well

Well, I think we can stop worrying about "unbonding" for now. I turned around and all three were huddled together and Lucy was passing around the licks.
The door is open for morning run around ... and the three of them hang out together in their pen.

After a job well done, Lucy relaxes next to her buds, one bunny laying on the next.
Looks like Ethel is again the "support bunny" to the structure.

Fender Bender

Fender bender.
Bunya stopped short.
Ethel was following too closely and rear-ended him.
Who knows how many points that's gonna' take off her license...

Top 10 Ways You Know You Love Your Bunny Rabbit [Part Deux]

[Feel free to substitute dog, cat or whatever your pet is for “bunny”.]

1. You have a different voice that is just for the bunnies.
I didn't know my wife even had a pet voice until we got bunnies

2. You talk to them when you come home from work.
Not just about YOUR day, but asking about theirs

3. You squinch your lips together and try to match the speed of the motor in your bunny’s nose when he's looking at you.
And, yes, you do look like the village idiot

4. You call your bunny “my little baby.”
She's approaching 10 years old

5. Your t-shirts are all bunny-themed.
You buy them from the bunny sites bookmarked on your computer

6. You rip the rabbit recipes out of your cooking magazines.
Other than that inhumanity, those magazines are sacred (see Affection for bunnies)

7. You delight in giving them treats because they get so excited.
And run high speed circles around your feet

8. You love it when they excitedly run up to greet guests.
It's like when your kids finally quit hiding behind your leg and would say "hello" when meeting new people

9. The bunny toys outnumber your kids’ toys.
Hey, the kids are just gonna' play on the computer anyway

10. When you are dining out, you always think of them as you admire the salad course.
So you order a “field greens salad, no dressing, to go” for the floor diners.
Of course, they may choose to eat on the sofa or coffee table while watching their favorite TV shows.

Check out The Top 10 Ways ... [Part 1]
(Thanks to my many pet-loving friends and relatives who cheerfully added to this list.)

Oooh - from my favorite restaurant! Perfectly prepared!
How can you tell that you love your pet?

Vanity License Plate - 4 OF 5

So many possibilities here. One of these has a good chance of being right (but all other suggestions welcome)

80% there?
Personal rating system ... being brutally honest in self-assessment?
4th of 5th family member?
4th of 5th child in the family?
4th of 5th car in the family?
4th of 5th BMW in the family? (If so, do you adopt?)
Or they could be a fan of Star Trek ...
remember the Borg, "7 of 9"?

Wild Animals: Deer and Fox and Bunny - Oh my!

Almost forgot about this - from January 11th, when Atlanta was frozen in:
Dark outside. As I head downstairs and pass the front door, I look out the front window and see ... deer! A line of deer carefully walking down our icy street, across our lawn, and down our driveway. They head by the side of the house and I watch as they disappear into the back yard woods. Nothing left now but their footprints across the lawn.
Deer track in the snow in our front lawn (a sheet of ice covering snow).
We don't live in the country - this happened in our subdivision.
On the right - deer track. On the left - kid tracks from days later.
Thanks for coming over to dig us out!
When I was finally able to get out of the subdivision, a fox ran across the road in front of my car.

It will be nice when it's not so cold and the visitors to our front lawn can return to our favorites:
Look closely right in the middle, for our tiny yard inhabitant.
He stood absolutley still for a while and then was gone like a bullet.
What animals other than your pets have ventured into your yard?

Bunny crackers!

Are they for humans or bunnies?

Mmmm - I tasted. Don't care who they're for, they're mine.

Are there little human crackers for bunnies?

The Three Bun-keteers

Ever wonder what they do when you are not around?
It's not all mischief...
Just now walked in on the buns unexpectedly and they were just lined up under Lucy's favorite "hang-out-under-this" chair, hanging out, chilling.
Or plotting their takeover in formation, with military precision (See sneaky).

What did you find your pets doing when you walked in on them unexpectedly?
