Bunny Miscellanea

Whether you believe in evolution, if you have bunnies, you believe in devolution.
Like of paper towel tubes ...

Realized, they chew them in a similar pattern, every time they get a new one.

Other things to watch out for (when you have bunnies) are the devolution of wires and baseboards...

Before we learned better ...

Took our eyes off for 1 minute ...

Some old business and some new business

Facebook page: Be sure to check out the Facebook page - it has extra posts, pictures, links, memes, current events and such. You do not have to be a FB member to view it.

New blog page: Bunny Advocacy Memes - trying to collect and share them as found.

Have you checked out the Bunny Things page? If it's been a while, there are new additions.

Buncam: This was giving us some fits for a while but hopefully, it has been resolved with an upgraded PC and accessories so it can be on the air more reliably. More fully described on the buncam page, here are a few viewing highlights:
Usually on about 9 AM - 11 PM, east coast time
(but for Sunday mornings - pen cleaning day).
You can see the door to their pen and if it's open, they may be wandering around.
If it's closed and you don't see them, they may be hiding in a box.
All bets are off if electricity goes off or UStream is doing maintenance.

Thanks for being a regular Rabbit Ramblings reader!

The bunny paper box revisited

The evolution of the bunnies' paper box has been discussed (for example, here).

My wife ordered something. It came in a box that was at least 8 times the size of the item, surrounded by lots of those static cling packing peanuts (hate those). Didn't matter - it was broken. The company's customer service was superb; they re-shipped the item post haste. It came in another over-size box but was packed well enough not to break. Just wish the company would be a little more "green". It would seem they could save a fortune on packing materials and shipping.

Anyway, for our order at least, we tried to make them green. New boxes for the bunnies! And the rolls of brown paper that were crushed into the box as packing - another whole adventure for the bunny SCUBA box (Self Contained Underpaper Bunny Apparatus).

I brought the boxes and paper into the basement to start working on them. The brown wrapping paper was unrolled and trailing behind me like a 30 foot bride's train. It was very crinkly (that is, noisy) and the buns did a mad dash to hide. [THUMP!]

I crumpled the paper into their paper box and, after they came out of hiding - after all, it was just the silly human - they started exploring it while I worked on the boxes.

Ethel was the first out to see
what happened to her paper box.
Lucy quickly joined her.
Brave bunny Bunya watches from inside the pen,
putting a strong fence between him and the intruder.

Eventually, Bunya comes out to get up close and personal,
to examine this for himself.

Ethel nibbling a corner of the new paper and
gently rolling it around in her mouth
to detect the flavor nuances.
It meets with all the bunnies approval.

Here's 15 seconds of Ethel SCUBA diving:

All three of them love the added paper, whether they are nibbling it, hiding in it, or just making the noisy crinkling sounds themselves ... such power - they didn't know they could make that loud a ruckus all by themselves.

When we are gone and they are in their pen, they even stick their heads through the fence to grab big pieces and pull it back through to play with.

More about what the boxes turned into later.

The bunny digging box

Just an update. Ethel still loves her paper digging box.
Lucy will stroll by, grab a piece of the paper and hop off to nibble on it somewhere.

If this is too long, jump ahead or go do something else. She just tunnels around in the paper, digs here and there, pops her head up to see what's going on above the "surface" and, at the end, hops out.

When the clip starts, she's towards the back left (then to right, then back left...).
About 55 seconds in, she periscopes so you can see her. Briefly.
Another head pop up at about 1:15.
At 1:55, there's a brief head pop and she starts digging, which you can hear in earnest at about 2:15.

Earlier posts about Ethel and her digging box are here and here.

Fold your napkin into a bunny - Part Deux

An earlier post links to one set of folding instructions.

Found another set of instructions (for paper napkins) and a video, in case you are interested.

If you go here, they have a more detailed diagram to fold it their way (click on "Bunny").

Origami Bunny (Happy Birthday, Hank)

Rose made this adorable origami bunny.
She attributed it to her friend's illustration.

I am passing this along in case you are looking for something to do, but really as a "tip o' the hat" to my friend Hank, whose birthday is today. He is the one who sent me my origami bunny made out of a dollar bill, along with the instructions link to recreate one of your own. You can see a picture on the Bunny Things page, near the end (third "BT" from bottom - it was one of the earliest contributions).

Ethel in her paper digging box -- and out of it

Ethel still LOVES her digging box.
She stayed buried in there so long (yes, this clip was really cut down), that I lobbed in a treat to perk her up. Look for the tips of her ears. Near the end of the clip, her little head pops up.
Of course, when Bunya sees treats flying, he hops over to scam some for himself.

One morning, I accidentally made a loud noise. You know how bunnies love those.
Ethel was in her paper box happily tunneling away. In the millisecond after the loud noise, she was a bolt of lighting standing about 5 feet away from the box, at attention in her on-guard position - and a piece of her paper box came with her...

Love those blue, blue eyes!
I could have made a video of this, too.
This is what the video would look like -- stare at the picture for 60 seconds.
She did not budge after the rocket ride. She stood frozen like that trying to figure out where the danger was coming from.
Then she thumped at me and ran off to her pen.

The digging box evolution is told here and here.

Halloween Funnies' Bunny

Do you read the funnies?
I do. I think everyone should.

One day, I wondered out loud to my sister, why the first section of the Sunday paper I dig for is the funnies. She reminded me: Because that was the prized section that our father would go for as soon as he brought in the paper. So, it's in my genes and Pavlovian conditioning.

If you are a regular Sunday Funnies reader and lucky enough to have this wonderful comic strip syndicated in your paper, then you were rewarded with a little Halloween bunny!

Ethel in the (new) paper box

Find the bunny.
(The usual hint: Look for the pink ears)
Ethel was a little stand-offish after we upgraded Paper Box 1.0, aka "SCUBA": Self Contained Undernewspaper Bunny Apparatus  (here).

Maybe newspaper tastes different or the texture was more appealing. However, she has finally caved in and has been regularly enjoying Paper Box 2.0. She'll even jump in there and bury herself rather than eat breakfast. When walking past it to put down their morning greens, you hear the paper rustling, but can not see her in there.

Here's a real breakfast-time example, shot looking straight down into the box; this has been shortened, so about 30 seconds in, she surfaces and then jumps out. She was really playing in there much longer.

Sometimes, it looks like a little bunny bomb went off and the paper will be over the edges of the box and all around - kinda' like in the picture at the top.

We scoop it all back in and she is a happy bunny. So if you have a rabbit who likes to dig, Ethel has given this toy the Good Bunkeeping Seal of Approval.
