Miss Ethel may be mellowing... just a little
Mr. Bunya was our first bunny (and a surprise from our daughter, who left for college a few months later). As we learned about bunnies and bunny care, we wanted to adopt some companions for this sociable animal.
However, before we learned that, Mr. Bunya was a solo bun and got all of our attention. He became familiar with humans and is not as stand off-ish as the adoptees.
Ethel will not come for head rubs by herself. If you try, she'll jet away after a second.
However, she has come to realize that if she snuggles up real close to Bunya, she can PRETEND it's Bunya grooming her.
At first, she would only self-delude for less than a minute, maybe 10-30 seconds. Then she'd look up all surprised-like: "Who is this!? You're not Bunya!" - and run off. Bunya always stays and melts like a puddle into the floor to suck up the love.
In this video, Bunya settles next to my recliner for some head rubs (but never too close, so I have to extend my arm way over to reach him). Ethel hung around for more than 30 seconds. This is only an excerpt from a longer video, but Ethel actually hung out and accepted some pets!
This is a huge development with her. On the bunny pages, people often ask how long did it take for your bunny to trust you?
So Ethel may be mellowing... just a little - and after only NINE YEARS.
Bunnies require patience.

Pet stamps!
And they included a bunny!

Now, if we could only get a whole roll of stamps with nothing but bunnies...

Wishing you a very bunny Christmas!!!
One of my all-time favorite bunny pictures, my standard Christmas bun - and it's not even our bunny!

| *Sigh* Okay, Mom, I'll pose because it makes you so happy and, after all, I am so darn cute. |
This is Mr Cookie, one of the cutest bunnies ever and my way of wishing everyone a joyous, happy and safe holiday! Hope Santa Paws bring you what you want and what you need.
[Mr Cookie passed over the Rainbow Bridge about the same time we lost our Lucy, August of 2015. Sincere condolences to Mr Cookie's humans. The internet allows our treasured pets to live on.]

Watch This Before Getting A Pet Rabbit
This video is a cautionary tale about bunnies as pets, especially for the uneducated and/or unprepared. Many of the negatives can be avoided by educating yourself about the pet before you bring one home. You still have to bunny-proof your home (or try your best). Bunnies can be litter box trained. Bunnies need to be fixed (this will extend the life expectancy of a female rabbit).
Look for a local chapter of the House Rabbit Society and take their courses before you get a bunny: Bunny 101 and Bunny 201. When you adopt a bunny from HRS, they will already have been spayed or neutered (and their low adoption fee is less than the cost of the procedure at your vet).
If you do decide a bunny is the pet for you, please adopt, don't shop.
If you can't see the video above, try here.

Rabbit Ramblings is 4 years old!
A few musings on our fourth anniversary ...
Thank you to all the fans of the Rabbit Ramblings Facebook page. It has become its own blog. While there's usually a link to any new posts here, it has many of its own cute bunny posts, alerts, news items and more. And as far as "reach", it seems to reach what took this blog four years (about 425,000 pageviews) -- around every couple of months or so.
Thanks to Bunya, Lucy & Ethel for making our lives so entertaining.
Thanks to our daughter who smuggled Bunya into our basement.
Thanks to our son who suggested I start a blog.
Thanks to our other son, who mocks me as totally nuts and whose laugh as he's seen something that amuses him on the blog is a joy to hear as he says:
Just to be clear, Dad, I am laughing at you, not with you.
[He means it and he is not alone.]
Thanks to my sisters who, before this blog, probably never realized how many Bunny Things cross their paths almost every day.
Thank you to all you bunny fans out there who are members, followers, subscribers and especially, the commenters.
Thanks to Dr. Mrs. Bunnymom, my partner in life, bunny crime and bunny care.
A few RR statistics:
Bunny Things: Over 400??? (especially counting links to posts with Bunny Things too numerous to list one by one on the page)
Posts: Over 1,100
Comments: Almost 2,000
Pageviews - all time: About 425,000
Countries we noticed making those pageviews: 120
Facebook "Likes": Over 7,800
Please "Like" Rabbit Ramblings on Facebook! Thank you!
Greater capacity at HRS and all animal rescues - but not the need for it
Whirled peas - Tolerance among humankind, joint efforts to repair the world, good health and prosperity for all
THANK YOU!

A Tribute to Rescuers: One Final Rescue
Found at Fuzzy Little Rabbits
Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All the recent arrivals were confused and concerned. They had no idea what to think for they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had spent some time waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was happening and began to gather at the pathway leading to the Bridge to watch. They knew this was something special.
It wasn't too long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung heavy and low with tail dragging along the ground. The other animals on the pathway...the ones who had been at RainBow Bridge for a while...knew the story of this sad creature immediately. They had seen it happen far too many times.
Although it was obvious the animal's heart was leaden and he was totally overcome with emotional pain and hurt, there was no sign of injury or any illness. Unlike the pets waiting at the Bridge, this dog had not been restored to his prime. He was full of neither health nor vigor. He approached slowly and painfully, watching all the pets who were by now watching him. He knew he was out of place here. This was no resting place for him. He felt instinctively that the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But alas, as he came closer to the Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who spoke softly to the old dog and apologized sorrowfully, telling him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their special people could pass over the RainBow Bridge. And he had no special beloved people...not here at the Bridge nor on Earth below.
With no place else to turn, the poor elderly dog looked toward the fields before the Bridge. There, in a separate area nearby, he spotted a group of other sad-eyed animals like himself...elderly and infirm. Unlike the pets waiting for their special people, these animals weren't playing, but simply lying on the green grass, forlornly and miserably staring out at the pathway leading to the Bridge. The recent arrival knew he had no choice but to join them. And so, he took his place among them, just watching the pathway and waiting.
One of the newest arrivals at the Bridge, who was waiting for his special people, could not understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the pets who had been there for some time to explain it to him.
"That poor dog was a rescue, sent to the pound when his owner grew tired of him. The way you see him now, with graying fur and sad, cloudy eyes, was exactly the way he was when he was put into the kennels. He never, ever made it out and passed on only with the love and comfort that the kennel workers could give him as he left his miserable and unloved existence on Earth for good. Because he had no family or special person to give his love, he has nobody to escort him across the Bridge."
The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?"
As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the all-invasive gloom lifted. Coming toward the Bridge could be seen a single figure...a person who, on Earth, had seemed quite ordinary...a person who, just like the elderly dog, had just left Earth forever. This figure turned toward a group of the sad animals and extended outstretched palms. The sweetest sounds they had ever heard echoed gently above them and all were bathed in a pure and golden light. Instantly, each was young and healthy again, just as they had been in the prime of life.
From within the gathering of pets waiting for their special people, a group of animals emerged and moved toward the pathway. As they came close to the passing figure, each bowed low and each received a tender pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. Their eyes grew even brighter as the figure softly murmured each name. Then, the newly-restored pets fell into line behind the figure and quietly followed this person to the Bridge, where they all crossed together.
The recent arrival who had been watching, was amazed. "What happened?"
"That was a rescuer," came the answer.
"That person spent a lifetime trying to help pets of all kinds. The ones you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of such unselfish work. They will cross when their families arrive. Those you saw restored were ones who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are permitted to perform one, final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor pets that couldn't place on Earth across the Rainbow Bridge. You see, all animals are special to them...just as they are special to all animals."
"I think I like rescuers," said the recent arrival.
"So does God," was the reply.

Pet Alert Card for your wallet
Okay, I may have exceeded the boundaries of my technical knowledge*, but ...
HRS has a pet alert wallet card and I wanted to try to share it here so more people can access it. Of course, this is applicable to anyone who has any pet, not just bunnies. Maybe some shelters or vets out there can print them up and distribute them to adopters and pet patients.
This is a wallet card for pet owners/guardians so that, in an emergency, rescuers will be alert to the fact that the person has animals at home that require care. The back of the card provides spaces to name back-up caretakers and to remind the pet guardian what information to provide to the "in case of emergency" ("ICE") pet contacts.
These templates can be printed as wallet cards. I was able to print these on Avery Laser 2" x 3.5" two-side printable Clean Edge Business Cards, Avery's item # 5877 (refers to template 8371). Using my laser printer, I was able to print the front on side 1 of the page, turn it over and print the back on side 2. The result was 10 double sided wallet cards.
I hope this works for you and that you never need it.
* Meaning, this is my first use of a new website that will supposedly allow these to appear in the blog post but it added an extra line to the front; hopefully this will just come out on the perforation between cards.
This prior post contains a link to a similar single wallet card that is downloadable.

Do you have a pet?
Well, this sounds like a good idea, from arf.net (okay, so maybe they're not bunny people, but they're pet people).
It's an Animal Alert card you can keep in your wallet. If something happens to you and you can't get back to them for a while, you can let someone know that you have pets that need attention.
You can download a pdf file of the card here.
Mine's filled out and in my wallet ....
They also have an "in case of emergency" form for your home window, to alert rescuers that there are pets inside. You can download that pdf file here.
