Bunya and Ethel's wild cousin

What adds a bit of fun to a morning exercise walk?
A bunny!

Spotted the bunny in a neighbor's lawn. Got too close and it bolted across the street to our lawn.

Then it found something to munch on here and stayed there for a while. Delivery truck didn't bother it. I walked by a few times and it was still there.

Racing Rabbit

He rounds the harepin curve with hare-raising speed. The tortoise was not even seen.
You don't need a car to race.  (17 seconds)

DO NOT ABANDON PET RABBITS OUTSIDE "IN THE WILD"

IF YOU WANT TO GIVE UP YOUR PET BUNNY - DO NOT JUST "LET IT GO" OUTSIDE!
Domestic pet rabbits do not have the coping skills to survive in the wild. It can be a tortuous death sentence from starvation, predators or parasites.

This beautiful bunny was abandoned in a huge park (while there's a small chance he escaped from his home, no one else appears to be looking for him). This video shows him in the scrub near a parking lot and then munching some hay, pellets and papaya left for him. He's otherwise surviving off the weeds growing through the parking lot cracks. GHRS volunteers were finally able to capture him.

Safe -- and headed to the GHRS bunny rescue shelter

It's a bundown!!!

Watch this video to see the best end zone binky of all time!

The original embedded YouTube video has been taken down.
Try this link instead.
It's very cute. About 50 seconds and the epic end zone binky is in slow motion at the end.

Bunny swarm!

On a small Japanese island (Okunoshima) somewhere in the Pacific...

[The original video that was embedded here was taken down, so here's another. If this one fails, then go to YouTube and enter this in the search engine: Stampeding rabbits chase after woman. The result should be several videos, at least some of which should work.]

Interesting that semi-wild bunnies also come to the sound of a human crinkling a treat bag. Must be ingrained in their DNA from caveman days.

Update on warrior bun Nala

This is an update on the little wonderbun from this post:
PLEASE - Do NOT release a domestic rabbit outside into the "wild"

Nala now has a husbun, Marshmallow (wearing white)!

Thanks to all the GHRS volunteers, vets, fosters and adopters who helped make this happen - and do so every day for, unfortunately, a seemingly unlimited supply of abandoned and homeless bunnies. Nala was in horrific shape after being abandoned outside. She has recovered and has found her forever home and mate.

PLEASE - Do NOT release a domestic rabbit outside into the "wild"

Domestic pet rabbits do not have the coping skills of wild rabbits to find water or food, avoid predators and parasites, or otherwise survive in the wild. This is not re-homing or being kind to your rabbit - it is animal cruelty.

Letting a bunny go into the wild because you don't want it anymore is a most painful death sentence, except for a lucky few "survivors" with an incredible will to live - warrior rabbits. And they only survive if they are found in time by caring rabbit-savvy volunteer rescuers, like those from an HRS chapter.

Nala is one such warrior rabbit.

Read her story here and updates about her progress are here.
There are NO GRAPHIC PICTURES of Nala's injuries - UNLESS you click the well-labeled link to a third page.

The Blissful Bunny is auctioning off a bunny bed and a bunny boat through 11-07-2013 with the proceeds going to help pay for Nala's care. Go to their Facebook page for pictures, current bids and details.

And of course, you can always donate to GHRS here.

Bunnies and your garden

We love our domestic house bunnies.

But if you are planting a garden, you may want to keep a few of the veggies for yourself (and not just the wild cousins of our buns). If that's the case, you might be interested in this article from The Washington Post.

Bunnies gone wild!

These aren't your parent's domestic bunnies!

Wild bunnies running, sunning, binkying, periscoping, popcorning, stretching and general all around wonderful frolicking ...

~ REMINDER ~
Please "Like" the Rabbit Ramblings Facebook page by 03-31-2013 to raise funds for the Georgia House Rabbit Society to buy the bunnies' shelter home (explained here).
Thank you!

Montana bunnies! LOTS of Montana bunnies

Searching for some pictures on the computer, came across these from a trip to Montana, to a time before we were bunny slaves ...

This sign there warned us that all wildlife is dangerous. And we saw lots that were ... as we were just, well, driving down the road. Incredible, really. Beautiful, majestic. But, this is a bunny blog.

So what about wildlife that has been exposed to humans ... lives in really close proximity to them? Well, as close as you can in Montana.

These were said bunnies - not domesticated - wild.
Not seeing the future, I did not take enough pictures of them
to give you a true picture of just how many there were.
The field was vast - and covered in bunnies of all sizes.
But just one "look" - alike.

Close-up of snuggle bunnies.
You can see how close they let people get to them.
LUCY is not that comfortable with it.

Here's a bunny who positioned himself in the shade ...

... while this bunny was periscoping for bright sun,
somewhere between the picnic table and the basketball.

Bunnies. Just love 'em.

Where are the "Buncam" three?

Perhaps it's daytime and you click on the "Buncam" button in the right-hand column ...
but you don't see three bunnies.
Well, sometimes you do. Especially dusk & dawn, bunny active times.
Or meal times - those are bunny VERY active times.

But those times you don't, where are they???

Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler have nothing on Rabbit Ramblings as we took our cameras deep into the wilds of the basement bunny domain last weekend to see where these creatures are when they are out of sight.

Ethel was actually out in the open,
snuggled down like a little bunny Sphinx,
in the coveted pen gate threshold.

Lucy was in what we believe to be her favorite
under-cover location, the Cheerios box.
They have chewed enough of a hole in its top
that you can sometimes see her black & white self
peeking though the skylight hole.

Bunya was snoozing in the tunnel ...
guess he wanted some cool shade,
away from that afternoon sun (or afternoon light bulbs).

Or perhaps when you don't see them,
they are at rehearsals for their new stage play!
Bunya wants to audition for Desi's part,
but in any case, has Fred down pat.

Guest appearance -- Wild bunny from New England

A Roving Rabbit Ramblings Reporter and Photographer captured (with her camera) a wild bunny on one of her expeditions.
Wild bunneh!
This little fellow, who looks like he shares an ancestor with Bunya, was roaming around the Green Animals Topiary Gardens in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

Actually, the photographer is my niece and she is skilled. One of her goals is to visit all the states. You can read about her adventures and see some more stunning pictures at a blog she started a few months ago at  Americana the Beautiful.

Yeah, yeah, my whole family looks for bunnies for me. You got that concept, right? Bunny cards, bunny pictures, bunny web links, bunny toys - for bunnies and that look like bunnies, bunny cartoons in the funnies...
Just look at Bunny Things.

Bunnies, quick - look at your visitor!

This afternoon, I was in the basement with the bunnies. We looked out the window and about 10 feet away from us saw this...
Like the bunnies, the deer nibbled some greens, although the deer seems to reach a little higher than the bunnies.

What's amazing is that we do not live in a cabin in the woods. We live in the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody burbs of Atlanta.
It's nice to see that we are not totally citified here.
